3 people go into a restaurant and the bill comes to £30. They decide to split it 3 ways and pay £10 each. The waiter then comes back and says hes overcharged them by £5 making the bill only £25. The waiter hands over the £5 left over and the 3 people each take a pound and the £2 left they give to the waiter as a tip. That means that The 3 People have each only paid £9 because they got a pound back. 3 x £9 = £27. Plus the £2 tip = £29. Where has the £1 gone???? |
|
| I have to thank my nephew Nathan for this one. It did make me think a bit, but I knew it wouldn't stump you lot for long! | |
| There is no pound as they all put £1.00 in = £27.00. That's £25.00 for the meal, £2.00 tip and £3.00 back. It's just the way that it is worded. The £2.00 tip is included in the £27.00. (from Melissa - Year 3) | |

The pound hasn't gone anywhere because if the bill was £25.00, they would have each paid £8.33 + the £2.00 tip = £30.00. |
|
| 8.33 x 3 = 27.00 + 2 = 29.99 (from Jack - Year 4) | |
| OK Jack. I totally agree. Er, where did the other penny go...? | |
| There is no £1.00 missing. For the food + £2.00 for the tip = £27.00 + the £3.00 back = £30.00 (from Lucy - Year 4) | |
| VAT (from Tom - Year 4) | |
| The bill was £25.00. The waiter's tip was £2.00 and the three customers had £1.00 each. | |
| So 25 + 1 = 27, 3 x 1 = 3, 27 + 3 = 30. So there is not a missing pound. (from Victoria - Year 3) | |
