Addition is when you put lots of stuff together (numbers, sweets, elephants, etc.) to find out how much you have altogether. Your answer will be bigger than the numbers you started with.

Area is the total space inside a 2-D shape, like if you measured all the space of your bedroom floor. Think of it as finding out how many squares you can fit onto your bedroom floor. You measure area in square centimetres (cm²) or square metres (m²).
