Mayan Garden

This website has been created from experiences and photographs collected during an ethnobotanical project carried out during the year of 1999. The project investigated the use of medicinal herbs used by the Mayan population in the village of Tihosuco, Quintana Roo state, Mexico, which led to establishing a botanical garden of herbs used by the people within the village.

In 1847, Tihosuco became on of the focal points for the start of the Caste War, waged between the Mayan and Spanish controlled forces, which lasted almost a century. It was one of the most violent conflicts within the history of the Mayan world.

The history of the Caste War is told in a museum specially renovated in Tihosuco. It serves as a centre for reflecting Mayan culture both past and present. The museum grounds are also the location for the medicinal herb garden.

With this WebSite you can find out more about the herb project, learn about the plants they use and see how a herbal cream is prepared.

Your can also take a tour of the museum and discover one of the most important events which defined the Mayan world of today.

You can also find out where Tihosuco is, should you wish to visit the museum and learn far more about the story than can be told within these pages.
