| Looking up the hill
from the front entrance of the museum, one can see the church, which has
become a famous symbol of Tihosuco. The church was partly destroyed when
the village was attacked and razed to the ground during the Caste War. The
village lay in ruins and was deserted for almost a century. During this
time vegetation re-grew amongst the ruins and the village was absorbed into
the surrounding low forest. In the 1930's the Mayan people came to Tihosuco,
cleared the forest and re-populated the village. Today the village has swollen
in area and numbers over 7,000 inhabitants. The church is still used today
for catholic services, although its roof only covers half of the building.
