This mural outside the entrance of the main town museum depicts the Maya as they should be known today - not as a historical race but as the 20 million strong population of which they are today stretching across Mexico, Belize, Guatamala and other south American countries. As the text says: "The Mayan zone is not an ethnographic museum, but is an actively living population."
