These 5 paintings also by Marcelo Jimenez depict the last 5 insurrections of the Maya against the Spanish, the last in 1761. Spanish priests and citizens were attacked. In retaliation Mayan villages were burnt to the ground and dissenters caught and killed. The battles were violent, but the Spanish forces defeated the insurrections each time. Eventually the Yucatan peninsula settled into a heirachial society, with the Spanish controlling and exploiting the Maya.
