| This text 'Causes
of the Caste War' highlights the many differences, antagonisms and factors
that existed in the Yucatan. These included rivalry between different groups
in the peninsula; the biased appropriation of lands to the economically
powerful; the high taxes demanded from the poor; the political instability
between liberals and conservatives, meridienses (north of the peninsula)
and campechanos (south west of the peninsula), independants and mexicans,
and the use of Maya in all these fights, and the 3 century long oppression
of the Maya. All these factors fuelled the spark that was to be the fire
of the Caste war. |
