The Garden

30th June 2005

The garden of Mr S. is full of wildlife. If you stand in his garden with your eyes shut, you can hear the chirps and the hum of insects and animals all around you. If you're quick, you can spot all sorts of creatures whizzing through the air or sneaking through the undergrowth. Unfortunately, they are often too quick for my faithful hand-held camera. However, Mr S. has a very powerful camera and a tripod and he was able to capture some exciting pictures of visitors to his garden. He shared his pictures with me so we could share them with you.

There Be Dragons...

Dragonflies are common visitors to ponds and places near ponds. They are very difficult to photograph (especially to get a photo as amazing as this) as they move very quickly and fly off at the slightest movement. Ask Mr S. He'll tell you how patient he had to be to photograph this dragonfly.

Hello

There are many birds that fly around the garden of Mr S. Some are welcome, some are not. If you are a pigeon reading this, you're not welcome as you are noisy and messy. However, all other birds are welcome, including this little one here. Both Mr S. and myself don't know as much as we would like to about the different types of birds, but we reckon this is a type of Finch. Ornithologists, please feel free to contact us.

To The Side Please

This Finch looked very comfy perched on the branches of this Hebe bush.

Who's There?

When Mr S. and myself first saw this visitor to the garden, we felt anxious because we wondered if all our hard work on the vegetable garden and flower beds would all be eaten away. He (or she?) has come a few times every day, and seems quite happy just to nibble on any old carrots on the compost heap, any plants we have pulled up or just on the grass.

Mmmm...tasty!

This rabbit is actually being helpful. S/he is saving us the job of weeding the grass out of this garden by eating it! Do you think if we trained the rabbit, we could get it to eat all of the other weeds in the garden?

Whassup?

No matter how relaxed a wild rabbit looks, it is always on the lookout for danger. The rabbit looks quite alarmed about something it has seen or heard. Could it be the fox who sometimes visits? Could it be the sound of school children? Could it be Mr S. stalking through the undergrowth to get a good picture? Is the Mini-Garden Hippo in the move?

Fantastic Foxgloves

This photo was taken a couple of weeks ago as they are past their best now. But didn't they look stunning? They are bi-annuals - they grow for two years. In the first year (last year), they grew a green rosette of leaves. In their second year (this year) they grew these magnificent spikes of flowers. There are many wonderous things you can find in the garden of Mr S., and it is always different every time you go out there.

Thank you to Mr S. for his kind permission to use his photos on the SonicMattC Website
