The latest from the garden: (Last updated 20th December) Well, what a year it has been, and the great thing is that we can look back on it whenever we like on this webpage. A lot of work has gone in to growing the garden this year; the digging, the sowing, the planting out, the watering, the weeding, the harvesting, the donating of the harvest. The Garden Volunteers have done an excellent job, and we all hope that the good work will continue with same enthusiasm next year (try to stop them!) So what plans do we have for next year? Well, lots, but time will tell if we have the time to carry all of them out. At least there will be some more flowers and vegetables grown, including Runner Beans of course! Ideas are also floating around to turn the garden into a more formal learning area, so that any visitors will have a good idea of what's what without an official guide to tell them. We could also produce some plants to donate... there's so much we could do. Let's see how the year unfolds. Let's not forget the new pond, the wooded area, the rest of the garden, the activities of the Eco-Committee... all these are another story. Watch this space. I hope you enjoyed this year in the Garden. It was great having you to visit. Do come again.

After a heavy, although brief, snowfall in the Midlands, the garden lays dormant and frozen. The local cat and a few birds have left their tracks in the snow. The spinach stands defiant, one of the few survivors left. How will it fare in the thaw? How is the Mini-Garden Hippo? |

6th February 2004 |
The snow has long gone, and the garden couldn't seem to wait before it got going again. After the dramatic whiteness that covered the garden last week, it is fast turning green. What happened to the spinach? Did any other plants survive the freeze?
|
19th February 2004 |
Although it is only the middle of February, the garden is already bursting into life. We need to act fast in the garden so that it will be ready to put seeds and plants in when the warm weather arrives. What did we find in the soil? Was there anything left growing afterwards?
|
The Big Sow7th April 2004 |
A few weeks have flown by, but a lot has been going on in the garden. Many seeds have been sown and the garden has been changing into it's spring colours. What have we sown? Which tree has exploding sticky buds? What visitors have we had already?
|
The Big Germination23rd April 2004 |
Most of the seeds we have sown have already germinated and are now enjoying the rain and warmth. The garden is full of flowers and is attracting a number of visitors. How are the plants in the glasshouse doing? What does the Horse Chestnut bud look like now?
The Big Weeding Session7rd May 2004 |
The rain and the warmth have made a lot of work for us, and the new seeds from the weeds will make sure our work doesn't stop. How do weeds spread their seeds about? The hippo is pleased with the work we have done, but where is he now?
The Big Egg14th May 2004 |
Fried eggs in our garden? It sounds strange, doesn't it? But they really do look amazing. Lots of plants are ready to be planted out. We have also planted some more, thanks to donations from parents and helpers. What have we planted? Where is that hippo now?
The Big Munch2nd June 2004 |
The plants need planting out, the garden has gone mad, some of the seeds are nowhere to be seen and someone has found a free lunch. It's time to sort out the garden. What did it look like before? What does it look like now? What happened to the visitor?
The Big Bloom22nd June 2004 |
The Garden is changing fast. Some of the plants have finished flowering and gone, others have just begun and are looking fantastic. The vegetables are looking as though they will give a good harvest. But who are those tiny visitors who could ruin everything?
The Big Visit23rd July 2004 |
It's been great weather for the Garden - wet and warm. Everything has grown well, including what we didn't want to grow. What happens to the plants that don't get harvested in time? How are the sunflowers doing? Who has taken a big interest in our lettuces?
The Big Bean16th August 2004 |
There are no worries about watering the garden this year as it has been so wet. The plants are growing well and we have had a number of royal visitors over the past few weeks. Also, the Garden Olympics are go- who will be the tallest, the biggest and the most colourful? Who will get gold?
The Big Survive14th September 2004 |
The garden has been left to it's own devices for some weeks, and has loved every moment of it! What's ready to harvest? Will the sunflowers beat last year's record? How is the Mini-Garden Hippo surviving in the new forest?
The Big Harvest24th September 2004 |
After all of our efforts, what did we manage to harvest in the end? How long did our Runner Beans get? Some plants grew well, some did not. But the growing was enjoyed by all involved, including the Mini-Garden Hippo.
The Big Fall14th October 2004 |
Time flies by within the school, but nature always moves at its own pace. The leaves flutter down, the conkers fall, the harvest is ready, regardless if people have time to see them or not. What did we manage to harvest? Is anything still growing in the garden?
The Big Lean13th November 2004 |
The nights are turning chilly, the fruits and vegetables are all gone, the plants and trees have let their leaves fall and are shutting down for the winter. Yet despite this, some plants in the garden refuse to give up just yet. How long will they last? Also - compost. Where did all those plant bits, apples and bananas go?
The New PondSPECIAL!13th November 2004 |
A band of pupils, parents and teachers turned up on a sunny Saturday to plant and area around the new pond in the school. The Eco-Committee have once again shown that there is always more that can be done in the school to make it environmentally friendly.
The Big Snowfall19th November 2004 |
It has been a warm and wet summer and autumn, but a fall of snow spelt doom for many plants growing in the garden. What do frozen Nasturtiums look like? Did the beans appreciate nature's help in getting them ready for the freezer?
The Big Bedtime26th November 2004 |
So who managed to survive the snowfall and who did not? The garden is definately shutting down now for the winter, but how will the plants make sure that they are back in force next year? Also, where did our hippo get to...?
The Big Adios20th December 2004 |
|
It has been an exciting year in the garden, and now we've some to the end of The Garden 2004. Just before we go, let's just have one more look on this cold and frosy morning. Has the garden really stopped growing...?
